Ordinary neoprene wetsuits have always been measured in millimeters. But there’s more to Patagonia® suits than just neoprene and nylon. The special merino wool lining means that we don’t need to add extra rubber weight to gain added warmth. That makes for a more flexible wetsuit suited to high performance surfing in colder conditions.
Wool is naturally warm even when wet, plus it’s naturally odor-resistant. There are environmental benefits too. We slow wash our merino for softness without the use of environmentally harmful chlorine. Other wetsuit manufacturers claim earth-friendly, wetsuits lined with bamboo and polylactic acid (pLa). However, they are not as warm as our technologically advanced wetsuits and require the use of harmful solvents or genetically modified corn to make.
The special merino wool lining absorbs moisture, which is then heated by your body thus creating a greenhouse effect in your suit. The wool lining is laid out in a grid pattern and is bonded to recycled polyester to improve insulation, wick moisture away from your skin and dry quickly.
Our merino wool lining combined with high-density neoprene sets a whole new standard for performance and warmth. This necessitated the creation of a new rating scale for our wetsuits. We call this the R-Rating standard – and it indicates the appropriate suit for the waters you surf.
