Call on the Australian government to fully protect 30 per cent of Australia’s ocean by 2030.
Australia was once a global champion of ocean conservation. But in 2018, marine sanctuaries around the country were opened up to seismic blasting, offshore oil and gas mining, and industrial toxic fish farms. The largest downgrade occurred in the Coral Sea Marine Park.
In 2021, the Australian Government committed to protect 30 per cent of the ocean by 2030 and to date 22 per cent has been afforded sanctuary-level protection.
We believe that by creating a fully protected network of marine sanctuaries and being led by First Nations knowledge and stewardship, we can safeguard vital ecosystems, reverse species loss and slow the impact of climate change.
