Getting to and from the surf often means missioning through cool or windy conditions with plenty of moisture in the air. So to stay warmer and more comfortable before and after sessions, we set out to build lightweight, surf-specific insulation that had just the right amount of warmth and weather protection. After plenty of experimentation, we realized that the materials we really needed—stretch boardshort fabric and thermal wetsuit lining—had been with us all along, so we took the best qualities of each and combined them to build the versatile new Stretch Thermal Hoody. The 7.8-oz bonded fabric has an exterior face made from the same light, stretchy and durable 2.8-oz 100% recycled polyester we use in our Stretch Planing Boardshorts, with 50+ UPF sun protection and a DWR (durable water repellent) finish that sloughs off fog, spray or light showers. Sliding on easily and insulating even when wet, the interior thermal lining is the same stretchy, fast-drying 95% polyester (51% recycled)

Face fabric is 100% recycled polyester with 2-way mechanical stretch, 50+ UPF sun protection and a DWR (durable water repellent) finish; bonded interior thermal lining is light, stretchy and fast-drying solution-dyed 95% polyester (51% recycled)/5% spandex inverted microgrid

Fixed 3-panel hood with laminated visor offers streamlined protection and a full range of motion

Self-draining, mesh-lined front slash pockets have noncorroding plastic zippers with added zipper pulls for ease of use

UPF Fabric

Lacking fur, feathers or scales, we humans have to think up clever ways to protect ourselves from the sun. Products with the UPF designation provide built-in sun protection that won’t wear off.

To achieve sun protection, Patagonia takes a varied approach, depending on the degree of protection desired and the fabric used. Elements of the strategy can range from yarn selection to fabric construction to the use of special finishes (especially for light colors which generally provide less protection).

Water Resistant

DWR (durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.
