NOT FORKIN’ AROUND: ADDY JONES IS DEADLY SERIOUS WHEN IT COMES TO COMPOST

Episode two of Farm Boys – Forkin’ Around – has just dropped.

This week we’re back on Heath’s farm on the Eyre Peninsula and out in the compost pile. When you live on a property with thin, sandy soils like Heath does, you need to have your compost program firing to feed your backyard garden.

Fortunately for Heath, he can call on the expertise of Addy Jones, a composting guru who has made a fine art of turning garden waste back into fertile soil.

Some of the key composting take-outs from this week’s episode:

“Come out every three or four days, give it a bit of a forkin’ around, give it a water. The more you turn the more it goes.” – Addy Jones

“Anything that’s lived I throw in my compost piles. If I’ve got a dead bird in the mix I’ll throw the dead bird in there.” – Heath Joske

And while there’s great personal satisfaction in growing your own food and feeding your family, the hardcore gardener derives an even deeper feeling of connection to the earth gods by creating their own dirt. “Pretty satisfying feeling when you know you’ve built a good compost pile,” says Heath. “You just know deep down she’s gonna be humming. And with Uncle Ad on the scene she’s gonna be humming!”
