Product Safety Recall ofCapilene® Cool Daily tops, Capilene® Cool Daily Sun Mask and Tropic Comfort tops
Some of our UPF 50+ styles missed the mark

We recently discovered that some products in two of our sun protection lines — certain styles of the Capilene® Cool Daily and the Tropic Comfort families — do not provide the UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) 50+ protection indicated on the garment. Our tests confirm a range of UPF 17–45 instead of UPF 50, meaning the wearer may be exposed to greater levels of UV radiation than expected. This may lead to sunburn and may pose a risk of serious and sometimes irreversable damage to skin.

We've pulled our existing inventory, halted distribution of the affected styles until we can fix the problem, and we're recalling the affected products.

A Few Common Questions
  • What if I cut the tag out, or I can’t find the style number?

If you cut the tag out of your product or if you can’t find the style number, you can still make a return. Get started below

  • Why is it a “recall”? And whose idea was the recall?

Ours. Once we discovered our products didn’t live up to what we had claimed, we decided to initiate this product recall. We never want our customers to feel disappointed, and we always do our best to build the very best product.

  • How did this happen?

In May 2021, we discovered the issue ourselves through internal tests, which we then had confirmed by an independent laboratory. These recent UPF tests contradicted earlier results indicating the materials exceeded UPF 70. Our initial testing was done during the material development process and prior to the Winter 2019 product release, but we didn’t test again after the garments were made at the factory. We are changing our process so this doesn’t happen again.

  • How long will it take to receive my refund?

If you purchased your product directly from Patagonia.com.au, and you complete your return online, you will receive a refund in 5–10 business days, once Patagonia receives the product.

  • What is Patagonia planning to do with the unsold and returned products?

We will look to recycle or repurpose the garments through our Worn Wear program. Rest assured, the landfill is not an option.

This means that you should return your product for a full refund. Here's how to return it:
