The Farm Boys van breaking down on the Far South Coast of NSW was a blessing in disguise, as the boys took the opportunity to catch up with old mate, Wayne Carberry who took them for a walk and a feed on Yuin Country.

“It’s funny the curve balls life throws you,” laughs Heath Joske.

He and Addy Jones had just hit the road to begin their road trip, filming for the second season of Farm Boys, when the Farm Boys van rolled to a stop on the NSW South Coast and refused to go any further. An hour later it was on the back of a tow truck, and the boys had an unexpected free week.

“We couldn’t move anywhere. We were stuck in this sleepy little village,” recalls Heath, “and who did we to run into but my friend, Wayne Carberry. I couldn’t believe my luck. We had all this spare time to catch up with Wayne and see the beauty of that area through his perspective and learn about the magic of that part of the world.”

Wayne is an original local in the area. A Yuin man and surfer, Wayne has a profound understanding of this stretch of coast and the marine life that have fed his people for tens of thousands of years, connecting them deeply to it.

Wayne, Addy and Heath with a late afternoon cook-up of mullet, abalone and native greens.

“Whenever I’m away and I come home I walk across Country,” says Wayne. “I feel the power and the energy come straight through. This is why I live very close to all my traditional foods. As close as possible in the water, to be able to get that spiritual connection to the place, my connection to Country. Having the foods close to nature and on Country, I can receive these visions – I call them ‘cultural visions’ – and they allow these beautiful dreams to come through. They come from a long way back in the creation stories and that’s what the food does to me, it connects me.”

Wayne took Heath and Addy for a walk, forage, and a cook-up on the beach. He explained his people’s millennia-old connection to the local coastline, and how their food continues to connect them to it today.

“We had an amazing afternoon with Wayne,” reflects Heath, “going and foraging some seafood straight out of the ocean right there, and then going for a walk around that headland and grabbing those beautiful fresh salty greens then cooking up that food over the granite rocks right there, watching the sunset behind the mother mountain of that area is something I’ll never forget and it left a deep imprint on me.”

‘A Walk on Country’ is a bonus episode of Farm Boys: Road Wombats, filmed, directed and edited by Harry Triglone.
